A living Borneo tradition
The aso’, the hornbill, the standing ancestor figure: motifs Dayak beaders have carried for generations on baby carriers, sun hats and ceremonial dress. Every piece in this line is new work in that language: contemporary product, traditional grammar.
Handwork you can count
A 120 cm table runner carries roughly 28,000 glass beads, threaded one by one onto cotton. One beader, about three weeks. Nothing is printed, nothing is moulded. The pattern is built bead by bead, and it shows at arm’s length.
Not already everywhere
Buyers around the world know Indian and Central American beadwork on sight. Dayak work reads differently, with its dense dark grounds, mirrored hooks and guardian figures, and it sits naturally among linen, rattan and stoneware. A story the shop two streets over is not telling.

The women of Kampung Manik
Kampung Manik means the Bead Village. It is a literal name.
In this Samarinda neighbourhood on the Mahakam River, beading is what the women do. The tradition is Dayak; the hands are Dayak, Banjar and Bugis: neighbours who learned from neighbours, mothers who taught daughters. Most of the work happens at home, between family life: a runner is about three weeks of one woman’s hands, roughly 28,000 beads, each one placed. A wholesale order lands here as weeks of paid work for a group of women, at rates the groups set with us.

Four families of motif
Every piece in the collection carries one of a small family of Dayak motifs. Knowing them is good floor talk, and this page is written to be borrowed for your shelf cards and product pages.

Motif family 01
Aso’
the dragon-dog
Part dog, part serpent, the aso’ is the great guardian figure of Kayan and Kenyah art. On beadwork its body unwinds into hooks and spirals until it fills the field edge to edge. You read the curl of a jaw here, a tail there, inside what first looks like pure geometry. Traditionally it protected what mattered most: baby carriers, shields, the houses of leading families.

Tinggang
the hornbill
In Dayak cosmology the rhinoceros hornbill flies between the upper world and this one as a messenger and an omen bird, and today it is the emblem of Kalimantan itself. Beaders render the sweep of its casque and tail as long curved lines that give a composition its movement. On a contemporary shelf it reads simply as a strong, strange, beautiful bird.

Kelunan
the human figure
A standing figure, arms raised, faceted into the bead grid. In older work the figure marked rank, with the fullest versions reserved for the carriers of leading families, and it stood as ancestor and guardian over the child who rode beneath it. The figures beaded in Kampung Manik today are new drawings in that tradition.

Motif family 04
Mata punai & the borders
the dove’s eye, zigzags, paired hooks
The small repeating patterns (mata punai, the dove’s-eye diamond, with its zigzag and hook companions) are the grammar that frames every larger motif. They are also where the beaders improvise: a colour swapped, a border traded with a neighbour, a signature in the margins. Most of the small-format pieces in the line are built from borders alone.

These motifs belong to living Dayak traditions. Everything we sell is new work, designed for contemporary homes and made in Kampung Manik by women of the Dayak, Banjar and Bugis communities, paid at rates agreed with their beading groups. We do not sell ceremonial objects or antiques, and nothing on this site should be read as one.

One neighbourhood in Samarinda, on the Mahakam River, where beadwork is the daily craft of its women. This is where every piece we sell is made. Watch first; the film says it better than the page does.

Samarinda sits on the Mahakam, the river that was East Kalimantan’s road before there were roads. In one of its kampungs, Kampung Manik, literally the Bead Village, beadwork is not a workshop trade but a neighbourhood one. It happens on porches and living-room floors, in the hours between school runs and cooking, by women who learned it the way you learn a language spoken at home.
The tradition is Dayak: the motifs, the colour logic, the dense grounds all come from the beadwork of Borneo’s indigenous peoples. The village, like most of Samarinda, is more than one community. Dayak, Banjar and Bugis women live on the same lanes and bead the same patterns. Neighbours taught neighbours, mothers teach daughters, and the craft crossed community lines a generation ago without ever leaving home. Three heritages keep one art form working.
The work itself is slower than photographs suggest. Beads go on one at a time: a table runner is roughly 28,000 of them, about three weeks of one woman’s hands. Patterns are counted, not printed; a mistake is unpicked bead by bead. Pay is per piece, at rates agreed with each beading group, and a wholesale order arrives here as weeks of that work, planned around the household, not against it.
Alana Wina Trudi is a founder-led company based in Samarinda. Orders are coordinated directly with the beading groups, with no agents between the village and your purchase order, and every piece is checked in Samarinda before it ships.

Materials & sourcing
Three materials do almost all of the work: glass seed beads, bought by the kilo in Samarinda’s craft market; cotton thread and canvas; and natural rattan for frames, trays and bag bodies. Brass fittings appear where a piece needs them. Material declarations ship with every order; care and handling notes are included in the carton.
